Halloween also known as All Hallows’ Eve is a celebration observed in a number of countries on the 31st of October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day. It begins the three-day observance of Allhallowtide, the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs and all the faithful departed.
Never ones to miss out on a good celebration, the last few years have see Aussies jumping on board all kinds of Halloween festivities – corporate events, parades at schools, kid’s parties and of course the customary neighbourhood trick or treating.
The modern tradition of passing out candy to trick-or-treaters on Halloween is likely based on the medieval custom of “souling” on All Souls’ Day. Early Christians made desserts called “soul cakes” to honour their dead on All Souls’ Day and children would walk from house to house singing for the cakes. Confirming what we’ve always known…that kids will do anything for a sweet 😉
